Maine insurance coverage icon Woodrow Cross passes away at age 103 – Mainebiz

Woodrow Cross, who established a Maine-based insurance coverage agency that today is one of the largest independent companies in the nation, passed away in harmony Sunday at age 103 near his home in Bangor.

The child of Melvin Cross and Mabel Speed Cross, he was born in December 1916 on a little farm in Bradford. In 1938, after the abrupt death of his dad, Cross began running the family’s little nation store to support his mother and more youthful brother or sisters.

During World War II, Cross served in the Pacific theater as a member of the U.S. Army.

After marrying and beginning a family, he moved with them to Bangor in 1954. He quickly got an insurance license and started the Woodrow W. Cross Company– now called Cross Insurance coverage– from his cooking area table, according to the company site.

In 1963, Cross moved his at-home agency to an office in downtown Bangor, hired his first employee and acquired his very first agency. He later continued to develop business with boys Royce Cross and the late Brent Cross, in addition to grand sons Jonathan Cross and Woodrow Cross II.

With head office still in Bangor, Cross Insurance coverage uses more than 1,000, represents dozens of insurance coverage companies, and operates over 40 branches across eight states. Cross Insurance is likewise the namesake sponsor of the Cross Insurance Coverage Center in Bangor and the Cross Insurance Coverage Arena in Portland.

Woodrow Cross “had a real love for his work,” according to his obituary. He was the recipient of a number of awards, consisting of an honorary doctorate of business administration from Husson University, calling to the Junior Achievement Maine Business Hall of Popularity, and the distinguished Norbert X. Dowd Award from the Bangor Chamber of Commerce.

Cross was predeceased in 1992 by his wife, Janette Bean Cross, as well as by his parents, boy Brent, brother Leon Cross and sibling Lula Cross Zinni.

Woodrow Cross is survived by daughters Connie Cross Guelich and spouse David of Roanoke, Virginia; Judith Cross Olson and husband Greg, of Lexington, Massachusetts; child Dennis Cross and wife Carol, of Orono; Royce Cross and partner Louise, of Maker; daughter-in-law Lori Cross, of Bangor; 14 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.

A personal graveside service will be held for the household.
