KENNEBUNK – Richard Calvin Gordon, 90, of Kennebunk, passed away on May 10, 2021, at his residence following a lengthy period of failing health.
Richard was born on March 14, 1931, in The Bronx, N.Y., to Leo and Frances (Diamond) Gordon. He graduated from DeWitt Clinton High School in The Bronx, and went on to graduate from Adelphi University in Garden City, N.Y., with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Business Administration.
Richard joined the United States Air Force, serving stateside until his discharge in 1955, when he began working for insurance companies in California and New York. At that time, he worked as part of a team that helped put together “New York 65” which ultimately became the basis of today’s Medicare. He then went on to work for NBC before retiring in 1991.
Richard enjoyed vacationing in Kennebunk for several years before finally deciding to move there permanently in 1991. He was an active member of the Ogunquit Rotary Club and had volunteered as a conductor with the Seashore Trolley Museum in Kennebunkport for many years. Richard also volunteered with the Southern Maine Agency on Aging, ultimately becoming its president.
Richard is predeceased by his daughter, Debrah Crock, and his brother, Arthur Gordon.
Survivors include his wife, Joan (Melomo) Gordon; his daughters, Patricia Gordon of Charlotte, N.C. and Pamela Gordon of Hammond, La.; four grandchildren, Erik Konyk, Paul and Thomas Moriarty, and Matthew Olson, and four great-grandchildren.
The family is grateful they were able to allow Richard to be at home throughout his illness and would like to acknowledge and thank Dr. Strassler, Hospice of Southern Maine, caregiver Loyal Boucher, and two special angels, Sybil and Diane, for the special care they provided.
A Celebration of Richard’s life will be held 1 p.m., Friday, May 14, 2021, from Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer St. Kennebunk. Interment will be in Holy Rood Cemetery, Westbury, N.Y.
