The school board chair discussed the pandemic and systemic bigotry.

PORTLAND, Maine– In his State of the Schools Address, Portland Public School board chair Roberto Rodriguez laid out the difficulties the district has

dealt with since the start of the pandemic.

“If you had actually told me last November that in 2020, masks, social distancing, and hybrid learning would become words that we utilized every day, and I would be speaking with you through Zoom in my living-room wearing sweatpants, I would not have thought you,” Rodriguez said.

Over the summer season, Rodriguez said the board made a hard decision to embrace a hybrid plan. He said a tough part was getting technology devices to almost 900 students who selected to learn totally remotely.

“It unexpectedly became our most recent and largest school. We at first had problems with innovation acquisition and distribution, optimum scheduling of classes, and lapses with communication with households. We have actually worked to deal with all of these problems and the remote academy program is running much smoother now,” Rodriguez stated.

The district had the ability to take advantage of outside learning and through neighborhood partners, had the ability to secure brand-new supplies to keep trainees safe.

“All of which collaborated to supply 2,000 thermometers and 500 kid- size multiple-use masks.”

Rodriguez stated the pandemic is not the only crisis the district is fighting. He stated the district is continuing to

face systemic bigotry.” Our discipline data reveals our non-white trainees are disciplined more regularly and roughly than their white equivalents. The Portland Public Schools has a lot of work to do to attend to these injustices.”

Rodriguez said they are working to employ varied personnel, dealing with the curriculum to show all trainees, and are working to supply more equity training for

personnel.”The structure for Portland Public Schools stepped up this year with a new neighborhood project to raise at least $ 100,000 to accelerate and expand our school districts equity work,” Rodriguez stated.

On the other hand, Rodriguez said he is grateful to families for being versatile during these tough times and stated he eagerly anticipates dealing with city partners to make sure trainees get a quality education.
