Squirrel blamed for widespread power interruption that closed South Portland schools – WMTW Portland

Thousands of customers lost power in South Portland, Portland and Cape Elizabeth Thursday morning.Power was brought back prior to midday but not prior to requiring South Portland to close schools for the day.Superintendent Ken Kunin said all schools in the department were without phone and internet and five of the 8 schools lacked power. He said those truths made it difficult to hold remote classes. He also stated there would be no meals available at schools.Central Mainer Power said a squirrel caused a disruption at its substation on Highland Opportunity. CMP stated failures at its substations are particularly harmful for its crews and take longer to repair.SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine– Countless customers lost power in South Portland, Portland and Cape Elizabeth Thursday early morning.
