Woman attacked while walking in Portland’s West End, police say 59 MIN – WMTW Portland

Portland police said they are investigating after a woman reported she was attacked while walking in the West End Wednesday night.The woman said that she was walking on Gray Street at about 9:40 p.m. when she felt someone tap on her shoulder.Police said the woman reported that when she turned around a man punched her in the face and she fell to the ground. She said the man continued to punch her before leaving the area.Police said they believe it was a random attack. The woman was taken to Maine Medical Center where she was treated and released for her injuries.Michael Hughes said he and his roommate heard her screams and ran to help.”Almost thought, like, she could have got hit by a car or something I don’t know,” Hughes said. “She was just laying right in front of our steps. We just tried to talk her through it and gave her some water. We tried to clean her up a little bit and called police.”The attack has shaken nerves in the West End neighborhood.”Personally, I don’t feel comfortable walking around at night,” resident Lily Sangiovanni said.Since last October, there have been several other incidents in the same area where women were approached by a man in a car who tried to pull them inside. In one case, a woman was also punched in the face.”Those don’t seem to be connected to this incident. At least right now. Those cases are open investigations that have not been closed,” Portland police spokesman David Singer said.Portland police said they are advising people to take extra care if they are walking alone.Anyone with information on the attack is asked to call police at 207-874-8584.
